Many 18- and 19- year olds heading off to college still gain the notorious and unpopular “Freshman 15” pounds. Sara was healthy and active during high school.
She described studying late, and then sleeping late. She needed to get to class, so she skipped breakfast, or grabbed something unhealthy – something available and fast – high calorie coffee drinks, breakfast pastries, cookies.
Sara described that having food available 24 hours a day was a challenge, and that she often felt hungry when she was awake studying at 2am. Before when she was in high school, Sara described, she was never awake at 2am and never felt tempted to eat
in the middle of the night. Now she was heading for the snack bar or coffee shop at 1 am and getting pizza, cookies, ice cream or another high calorie coffee. Then while studying she would find herself with a large empty bag of cookies or chips.
Sara had also made a good group of friends during her first several months in college, and they enjoyed staying up late on weekend nights eating pizza, or going out to eat at local restaurants. Finally, Sara described how she was less active than in high school.
Now, 15 pounds heavier, Sara was discouraged and frustrated.
1. Start the day with The Ideal Chocolate Milk Diet (“ICMD”) in skim milk or soy milk. It’s always available and you can keep single-serve packets with you. That helps crowd out the hunger and unhealthy choices. You can also add Chocolate ICMD to a plain coffee to make it a mocha. But let the coffee cool down, or add a little ice, so it is between hot and warm, about 130 F. Above 130 F, it will clump a little.
2. Keep ICMD with you for between class breaks, anytime you might start to feel hungry. You can use it to increase the protein in your lunch too.
3. If you are planning to be with friends for fun or for studying, have a serving of ICMD just before you go. This will keep you from being hungry and help you avoid bad food choices because you won’t be starving. If everyone is having pizza, you will be comfortable having less.
4. For evening study sessions, be sure ICMD is handy. Use it to crowd out the ice cream or bag of cookies.
